CL-20 (Hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane)

CL-20 (Hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane) is a high-performance polycyclic nitramine explosive widely regarded as the most powerful non-nuclear explosive known. Supplied as a white crystalline powder, it delivers approximately 20% higher energy output than HMX, making it suitable for advanced energetic applications.

Key Details:

Chemical Formula: C6H6N12O12
(2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane)

Description: A cage-structured, polycyclic nitroamine with exceptional energetic performance.

Key Properties:
• Highest known density of any organic compound (2.04 g·cm-3)
• Extremely high detonation velocity (~9400 m·s-1)
• Superior energy output compared to HMX and RDX
• Highly sensitive to mechanical impact and friction

Primary Uses:

  • Military Explosives: Used as a high-density, high-energy explosive filler in advanced munitions.
  • Propellants: Incorporated into high-performance solid rocket and gun propellants, particularly where low signature (reduced smoke) is required.
  • Energetic Formulations: Often co-crystallized or formulated with other materials to reduce sensitivity and improve handling characteristics.

Safety Note: CL-20 is highly sensitive to impact, friction, and mechanical stimuli. Specialized handling, processing, and formulation techniques are required to mitigate risk.
