Potassium Chlorate

Potassium chlorate (KClO3) is a powerful white crystalline inorganic oxidizer widely used in pyrotechnics, safety matches, and energetic compositions. When heated above 400°C, it decomposes to release large volumes of oxygen, greatly enhancing combustion.

Key Details:

Chemical Formula: KClO3

Description: A white, odorless crystalline powder or crystal form oxidizer known for its strong oxygen-releasing capability.

Primary Uses:

  • Pyrotechnics: Used as an oxidizing agent to increase flame temperature and intensity in fireworks, flares, flash compositions, and colored effects.
  • Matches: A key component in the ignition head of safety matches.
  • Other Applications: Utilized for laboratory oxygen generation, in explosive formulations, and in limited disinfectant applications.

Hazards: Potassium chlorate is highly reactive and potentially explosive when mixed with combustible materials such as sulfur or organic compounds. It is sensitive to friction, impact, and improper handling.
