LRSAM / MRSAM / QRSAM Solid Propellant

The LRSAM, MRSAM, and QRSAM systems use high-energy, smokeless solid fuel propellants, typically Composite Modified Double Base (CMDB) or similar formulations, housed in a single-stage rocket motor. This propellant delivers intense, fast-burning thrust for high-acceleration supersonic flight and rapid interception of aerial threats.

Chemical Formula & Composition (General):

  • Oxidizer: Ammonium Perchlorate (NH4ClO4).
  • Fuel: Aluminum powder (Al) for high-energy combustion.
  • Binder: HTPB (Hydroxyl-Terminated Polybutadiene) or polyurethane to provide structural integrity and controlled burn rate.

Description:

The propellant is a solid, molded, rubbery composite cast into the missile's rocket motor. It is engineered for high-energy density, rapid combustion, and minimal smoke to reduce infrared and visual signatures during flight.

Use:

  • Propulsion for supersonic surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) like LRSAM, MRSAM, and QRSAM.
  • Enables quick-reaction interception of aircraft, helicopters, and other missiles at various ranges.
  • High-acceleration, low-signature thrust ensures reliable engagement in tactical air defense scenarios.
